An exceptionally rare piece of Vietnam War–era Marine Corps history, this U.S. Marine Corps 3rd Marine Division sweatshirt represents a seldom-seen form of in-theater and off-duty apparel associated with Marines serving in Vietnam. Sweatshirts from this period—especially those tied to specific divisions—are far scarcer than standard uniform items and were often privately purchased or locally produced for wear in camp, off duty, or stateside after deployment.
This example is connected by provenance to a Vietnam War USMC officer archive named to 1st Lieutenant Lawrence J. Merchut, who served with the 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines, part of the 3rd Marine Division.
The sweatshirt displays the 3rd Marine Division insignia, a unit that saw heavy combat throughout Vietnam and became one of the most storied divisions of the war. Its simple, utilitarian design reflects the understated, functional garments worn by Marines beyond formal duty uniforms. The sweatshirt is in good condition, with some paint stains, and the fleece has a nice broken-in feel. This is a highly collectible piece of USMC history and something you don’t see often.
